A PASSENGER train has derailed after smashing into a large tree - sparking a mass evacuation onto the track.
The East Midlands service was carrying 33 people between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich when the terrifying scene unfolded at around 9pm last night.
1Chaos ensued after the train hit a tree between Thetford and Harling Road, leaving the front carriage severely damaged as it veered off the tracks.
Fire crews and cops raced to the scene, with all passengers evacuated onto the track.
It is understood there were 31 passengers on board, one of which was left injured, as well the driver and a guard.
Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service helped manage the evacuation with crews from East Harling, Thetford, Attleborough, Watton, Hingham, Wymondham, Diss and Carrow assisting.
A spokesperson for Norfolk Police confirmed: "Our officers are at the scene supporting British Transport Police & Network Rail.
"One passenger with minor injury looked after by ambulance colleagues but no other injuries.
"Fire also on scene. Network Rail arranging transport for passengers to complete their journeys to Norwich."
Greater Anglia services between Norwich and Ely have now been scrapped with delays and disruption to East Midland Train services.
A spokesman for Greater Anglia said: “We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and anyone who is delayed by more than 15 minutes is eligible to claim delay repay compensation."
